Dates to Remember

Do you ever feel like holidays come way too fast year after year? Sometimes I wonder, “Why can’t we skip a year once in a while?” But then I think about it and realize that if we do skip a year, then we’ll probably skip the next year and the next and the next… and then we will no longer commemorate those special events.

I find it interesting the way our lives are run and the creation of it all. Just the mere creation of a “day”, and then a “week”, a “month” and a “year” and how it all falls into place, so consistently and in proper order to keep our lives functioning.

I find it interesting too, how our minds work and how a particular day that marks a special event can stir up memories that you didn’t think about the entire year, until that date comes upon you. Feelings and emotions can also become heightened as you celebrate each special event in your life or perhaps when you remember a sad occasion also.

Our God is so intricate in his design. How amazing is all of this? I’m just so thankful for the Birthdays, Anniversary’s, Holidays, and special occasions that God allows me to celebrate each year and the memories that come with each of them. I am thankful too for the dates of loss and tragedy that we also stop to take time to remember.

I hope you too are thankful for particular dates in your life, and hope that there are times of celebration and also times of remembrance where you let your mind take you back to those occasions in your life where in reality, are what makes you who you are today and the person you have become. Which is a wonderful creation by the God of the universe who loves and cares for every part of your life. He not only loves and cares for you in the ordinary routine of your every day life, but He also gives you some very wonderful days where memories, feelings and emotions come in an entirely different way than those that we get accustomed to. And those EXTRA-ordinary days in your life, as the years go by, truly do become, VERY SPECIAL “Dates to Remember.”

To Touch the Soul

Most people usually have a reason for putting pen to paper and taking the time to write. Whether it be to write a story, write a journal, write a novel or write a song. Something inside of them is longing to get out and they find their release in writing. Have you ever thought about a reason why you choose to write, no matter what it is? I get this question quite often and so I’ve taken some time here and there to think it through.

The older I get, I find that the world all around me has become very desensitized. We are very accustomed to all of the things that we see in the movies and on the t.v. and even in the songs that we hear. Growing up I remember watching t.v. shows and movies where the story lines were so touching that they could bring me to tears. Even as a child I can remember my emotions being stirred by something I would see. Today, I can’t even recall a movie that has moved me so much or has stirred up any emotion.

I can remember songs that were sung at church that would reach deep into my soul and for 5 to 7 minutes, I was lost in the spirit and would feel so utterly close to God. Today, some of the worship songs I hear, have so many lyrics and changes that I can’t even figure out what the song is about, much less memorize their chorus. How can you take a song like that home with you and meditate on it throughout the week? It is so sad to me that I am rarely touched by the songs that I hear.
When I first began writing, I remember talking with Jesus about this and my desires to feel close to Him. Getting lost in a melody and a song is one of the greatest ways I get engulfed in worship to my Lord. Saying a phrase over and over about His glory and the goodness of all he’s done can move me so deeply I can’t help but cry before my Lord.

1 Samuel 16:23 says “And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.” Just like Saul, music has always had a way of calming my spirit. For me, the words of a song, with just the perfect melody can do wonders for my soul. I want to touch those places deep within and make people FEEL things deeply again. I want people to sing, give God Glory and enter into His presence. If I had to give a reason to why I write in just a phrase, the purpose for my words and melodies, I would have to say is simply ~ To Touch the Soul.
